Spring is finally upon us (although you wouldn’t know it after yesterday’s snow storm). That means it’s time to thaw out your frozen face and get it ready for the warmer temperatures and all the new beauty trends that come with the change of season.
But where should you start?! If you’re in Chicago, that’s a no brainer. Our new favorite go-to for all things eyebrows is Agnes O. Salon and Derma Spa (21 W. Elm Street) in the Gold Coast, where Sabrina Danyla of Beauty Babe is the resident brow magician and makeup artist.
Chicago! DreamDry (904 W. Armitage ) is here, just in time to make you beautiful for all of your holiday parties or to provide the ultimate in glamorous gifts for that special fashionista on your list.
I had the opportunity to attend DreamDry’s grand opening last week, to tour the salon and to try out the services – all three left me wowed and in a dream-cloud of glamour and hairspray.
DreamDry is truly a haven for the beautiful-hair-obsessed. The gorgeous salon space is set just off the street, and nestled between the various boutiques on Armitage in Lincoln Park. Inside, the surroundings are classic and clean in black and white. Each station is set up with a luxe leather seat for you to get cozy in while you peruse the style menu on your own personal iPad. Once you choose the style of blowout you’d like, you can sit back, relax and browse your favorite fashion magazines while the stylist takes good care of you. I chose a messy and chic wavy blowout for shorter hair – the Stevie – and it lasted for three days. I loved it!

Let’s break down the long day of fun and fabulousness, shall we?
Upon entering the magnificent space (check out this photo captured by Laurie of 312Beauty, to see what I mean), we were greeted with a layout of EcoTools entire makeup brush line. Although my face conveys otherwise (sorry, I am NOT a morning person), I couldn’t wait to try them out!
After a lovely breakfast, we were separated into small groups. My group headed to the first stop of the day, the Spa & Lash station with the lovely (and fellow Chicagoan), Carly Cristman.
Confession: I have never applied or worn lashes before, but I have to say, it wasn’t as scary as I imagined it.
Friday Find showcases the item ChiTown Fashionista has become smitten with during the current week. Plus, what better way to start the weekend than with a bit of impulse shopping? It’s been a long week, you’ve earned it.
For this week’s Friday Find, we’re taking a break from featuring tangible goods to shine some light on a couple of experiences you should partake in over the weekend (besides the event I’m hosting on Sunday). Be warned, one of them may still lead to the purchase of a tangible good or two.
Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf’s
I had the pleasure of attending a screening of this movie earlier this week, and have to say it is an absolute “must see” for anyone that truly loves fashion. This documentary provides viewers a clear understanding of what makes Bergdorf Goodman the destination of choice for shoppers who are not only seeking the best luxury goods, but appreciate the impeccable service and exclusivity that Bergdorf’s prides itself on.
From the storied history of the Bergdorfs and Goodmans (did you know the Goodmans lived on the top floor of the store for many years, in a 16-room apartment?) to the intensely tedious process of creating the store’s world renowned window displays, this film will make you appreciate Berdorf’s for more than just the obvious. Of course, there are a few juicy stories, as recounted by the owners, employees and designers. You’ll find out which celebrity unexpectedly purchased 70+ fur coats on Christmas Eve as gifts for loved ones and which designer was dropped by Bergdorf’s because they collaborated with JC Penney.
Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s opens today and will be showing at the AMC on 600 N. Michigan (if you’re not in Chicago, visit bergforf-movie.com and enter your zip code for locations and showtimes). Grab a few friends and check it out this weekend. You won’t regret it.
ULTA West Loop Grand Opening
That’s right. ULTA is opening a new location in the West Loop today!
For those of you that live and work in the area, I’m sure you’ve been walking past the storefront (16 S. Halsted) in anticipation of this day.
Sure, you can visit the store whenever your heart desires. But this particular weekend, in celebration of the opening, there are deals and freebies to be had. Today through Sunday, there will be complimentary makeovers and consultations from brands like Urban Decay, bare Minerals, Murad and Philosophy, gift certificates (for the first 100 shoppers each day) and free gifts (for the first 1000 visitors over the entire weekend). That’s more than enough reason to get down there at some point this weekend.
At the start of every Fall season, I contemplate throwing away all pale, bright and/or neon shade of nail polish I own. I’m not one to follow beauty “rules” so to speak, but high temps and sunny skies usually make me OD on hot pink. And by summer’s end I am DONE.
Just like fashion trends, each season the runway give us a sneak peek of what we can expect in the beauty world – from eye looks, to hair styles, and even nails. This Fall, short square nails seem to be making their way back. I’ve always been partial to this look; there is something about short, well manicured nails that is so elegant and chic. As far as color and style are concerned, this season’s trends can be summed up into the following five categories:
DARK:Burgundy nails are hot this season with other deep hues like navy and forest green.
NUDE/PALE:Think whites, creams, and pale golds. It is hard not to think of deeper hues this time of the year, but nude nails made their way to the runways for Fall fashion. This is nothing new. Nudes have been making their way into fashion and beauty trends for some time and this is something I don’t ever see changing. Nudes are so classic & chic; it’s hard to go wrong. What does feel different, is whites for the Fall and Winter seasons. Although, personally, I’ve always been a fan of white polish, no matter the season.
METALLICS:This trend started as a fashion and makeup trend and has now made its way to nails. Metallic finishes have a way of being fun yet chic at the same time.
TWIST ON A CLASSIC:Nude with dark tips. This feels very similar to the half moon manicures last Fall but still very fun. Think nude nails with dark red or deep navy tips. It’s classic yet a bit unexpected, which is always fun.
BOLD/NAIL ART:Nail art and texture. In two words: anything goes! Nail art has become increasingly popular and it’s more about the art of self expression than precise lines and clean looks. We’ve seen everything from simple polka dots to intricate tribal nail designs rock the runways (the patience it takes to create something like that is beyond me).
Now, here are some of the best polishes you can use to accomplish the nail color trends this season:
What are some of your favorite nail trends for Fall?
For some, Fall brings more than just cooler temps and falling leaves. Whether it’s you, or your kids heading back to school, you may find yourself skipping your beauty routine for a couple more minutes of sleep in the morning.
As much as we would like to wake up looking fresh and bright eyed, let’s be honest, that’s usually not the case. This quick and easy beauty routine will have you putting your best face forward.
Here’s what you will need:
1. Tinted moisturizer: Though this may not conceal every blemish you may have at the moment, a tinted moisturizer will help the overall appearance of your skin by evening out your skin tone. Laura Mercier makes a fantastic tinted moisturizer both in regular and oil free versions with a wide shade range.
2. Cream shadow: Applying a wash of color to your eyelids takes literally, seconds. You can use something similar to your skin tone to help even out any redness or veining on your lids, or kick it up a notch with frost or shimmer to instantly lift and brighten your eyes. One of my favorites is the Benefit Creaseless Shadow in the color “RSVP.” It is a light pink champagne hue that adds just a bit of color while brightening with a frost like shimmer.
3. Mascara: Using mascara instantly opens the eye, making you look more awake. This is a MUST HAVE beauty item for me. If I could only choose one makeup item for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. The Bobbi Brown Intensifying Long-Wear Mascara is perfect for defining your lashes while giving you tons of volume. A bonus? It lasts for hours on end without smudging!
4. Tinted balm stain: Sometimes lipstick can be a bit high maintenance. A tinted balm will provide color without the burden of having to constantly reapply. The Revlon Just Kissable Balm Stains are fantastic for just that. They are hassle-free lip balms that leave a beautiful stain behind giving you lasting color all day long. My personal favorite is “Passion.”
Ten minutes is all you need for this basic beauty routine. So go ahead, hit that snooze button a few more times!

Last week I had the pleasure of co-hosting a Bobbi Brown makeup party at Bloomingdale’s in Chicago (900 N Michigan Ave) with Yanira Garza of Manolos, Manicures, and This Mom.It was an evening filled with lovely ladies, beautiful makeup, and delicious treats.
The star of the night was the new Desert Twilight Collection for Fall 2012. Inspired by the desert sun light at dusk, this collection is filled with warm shades of pink and bronzey nudes with a pop of turquoise. Transitioning your makeup from summer to fall can often times be difficult, not with this collection. With warm plums and shimmery pink shades, with a hint of bronze, this collection makes that transition seamless.
The ladies were able to browse the collection and get their own look by one of the Bobbi Brown artists. The looks of the night varied from sultry and smoky to fun and bright. There was also some education given on skin care and finding the right skin care routine for your skin type. I have a soft spot in my heart for skin care and found myself circling that area more than a few times.
No one left empty handed thanks to the ladies at Bobbi Brown, yet a lot of us couldn’t help but pick up some extras to take home. I’m most excited about the Skin Foundation I picked up (I’m in the color Natural 4). I’m always on the hunt for great foundations and I must say, this light to medium coverage foundation is already creeping up to the top of my list. It is definitely buildable because it feels so natural and lightweight on the skin. I love it!
It was so lovely to see some familiar faces and meet some new beautiful ladies. The night was a hit and I can not thank everyone enough for coming out to support!*
Petra Strand (the creator of Pixi Beauty) has launched a new line called PixiGlow. Inspired by Disney’s Tinkerbell, this stunning collection is light, airy and shimmery. The packaging is beautiful and takes this line to the next level while still keeping it at an affordable price point. This six piece collection is perfection in terms of substance. They kept it short and sweet and did not skip a beat.
There are four items that really stand out in this collection:
The Fairy Face Palette, which provides you with five eye shadows (.03 oz each), five lip creams (.02 oz each) and a full size blush (.35oz), is a full face kit for just $34!
The Catching Shadows Crayon is a gorgeous neutral shade which is great for all skin tones and has phenomenal lasting power.
ThePirouette Pink Nail Color, though not incredibly unique, is absolutely gorgeous on the nails and is the perfect shade for Spring.
And my favorite of them all, the Magic Tink Tint. Not only is it incredibly smooth and moisturizing, it is a true your-lips-but-better tinted balm. As Pixi Beauty says, it delivers a “perfectly personalized pink tint.”
With these new additions to your makeup bag, you can take Spring head-on with your best face forward!
