I’m Still Writing…

You know that saying, “When one door closes, another one opens”? Well, that’s exactly what happened after I decided to take an indefinite hiatus from ChiTown Fashionista after 8 years of blogging.

About a month after my last post, I was offered the opportunity to write a weekly, nationally-syndicated column for Tribune Content Agency. Ummmm…you mean my work will be published by the likes of ChicagoTribune.com and other print and online publications nationwide?? Sign. Me. Up.

TCA Simple Style revised

I’ve been writing the column since April, and to say it has been a blessing would be an understatement. It allows me to still write about fashion despite my hectic lifestyle and gives my content a broader reach.

So, if you’ve been wondering what I’ve been up to, pay a visit to the Tribune Content Agency site or search my name (“Nikia Jefferson”) on the Chicago Tribune site. All of my articles are housed there and will provide you with some fun, informative reading material. *The article on fashion emergency remedies may be my favorite to date.

If ever you want to catch up, feel free to drop me a line at nikia@chitownfashionista.com or find me on IG or Snapchat (@chitown_fashion).

The End of an Era

CTF Collage

While everyone has been busy posting their best moments of 2015, I’ve been preparing to write this post, rounding up my best moments throughout the entirety of my blogging career. You see, after 7+ years of holding it down over here at ChiTown Fashionista, I’ve decided to take an indefinite break from blogging.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that the amount of posts hitting the blog have been few and far between for quite awhile. To be honest, I’ve been contemplating writing this post for over a year. But every time I even thought about taking a break, another opportunity or partnership would come my way, forcing me to reconsider my decision. The end of last year was a rough one. With the lost of three loved ones, I really began to focus on what’s important and the blog continued to fall lower and lower on my list of priorities. During that time, I also became involved in creating fashion-related events for Soho House and realized there are other ways for me to contribute to the local fashion community. Couple that with the way that the blogosphere is shifting (most people prefer to consume information quick and easy via platforms like Instagram and Snapchat), I feel it’s the right time to move on.

chitownfashionista new site

Don’t worry. Although ChiTown Fashionista is my baby, this is not a sad moment by any means. I’m looking forward to getting my hands in a few other fashion-related projects and initiatives as well as possibly freelancing for other sites and publications. And who knows, maybe I’ll end up becoming MJ’s momager (just kidding…maybe). Plus, I’m not going anywhere in terms of social media. I will continue to actively use Instagram (@chitown_fashion and @offpricepursuit) and Snapchat (chitown_fashion) to shine light on the best local designers, shops and designer deals.

Without further ado, let’s take a trip down memory lane. And after you’ve read through it all, please be sure to leave a comment mentioning how ChiTown Fashionista has enabled you. Whether it was a designer you discovered, a shopping event you attended, or a retailer you blew your entire budget on, I want to hear all about it!

When the tides changed

refinery29 feature

2011 was the year ChiTown Fashionista really gained its footing. I had been writing for over 2 years and all of a sudden, the exposure and opportunities started rolling in. Within the first two months of that year, I was a) contacted by Refinery29 to syndicate my posts (thanks to former Refinery29 editor, Shani Silver), b) invited to my alma mater University of Illinois to talk about my blog for their inaugural College Couture Weekc) asked by the team at Choose Chicago to begin contributing to their site as a local shopping expert. I also brought on my first contributor that year and was spotlighted in Refinery29. Needless to say, 2011 was an exciting time for the blog.

Team ChiTown Fashionista

ChiTown Fashionista team revised

With a full time job and a little one at home, I knew I wouldn’t always be able to hold down the fort on my own. I’ve had some extremely talented writers on Team ChiTown Fashionista to help me consistently push out content. Special thanks to Gabriel, Rita, SarahAntaash, Dana and Elise for all of your contributions! I love you all, dearly.

Black History and Fashion

In 2010, I decided to use Black History Month as an opportunity to celebrate black fashion. What started as a one-time series, featuring vintage photos from my family archives and online searches, grew to be an annual occurrence that also included photo submissions from my readers. This entire series contains some of my favorite posts of all time.

Original Video Content

In 2012, while pregnant with MJ, I had this bright idea of starting a video series that would feature the wardrobe of some of my favorite, local style stars. That’s when Closet Conversations was born. I had such a great time filming every last episode, getting to know each of my subjects a little better and sharing their fabulousness to a broader audience. There may be a few more Closet Conversations episodes in my future. Only time will tell.

From CoverGirl and Strength of Nature to Nordstrom, Macy’s and the Illinois Treasurer’s Office, I’ve had some amazing collaborations. Who knew that something that started as a hobby would allow for me to partner with so many well-respected brands and entities? I am forever grateful for the relationships I’ve built through this here blog.

The Shopping

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you know that my shopping addiction is real. As much as I enjoyed sharing shopping tips, discounts and inside scoop, nothing was more fun than the shopping trips I organized. Remember the Blogger Crawl and the girls’ trip to the Fashion Outlets? I’m starting to think that shopping trips may be my true calling.

Features and Accolades

CBS mention

There’s nothing more rewarding than having your hard work recognized. Every award I’ve received and every feature I’ve landed has resulted in a “pinch me” moment. Much love to Refinery29, TCW Magazine, Marie Claire and SPLASH for all of the amazing features. And special thanks to CBS Chicago (not once, but twice), Refinery29, New City, Rolling Out and The Shelf for recognizing me as one of Chicago’s top bloggers.

At the end of the day, ChiTown Fashionista would be nothing without the support of my readers. Thanks for hanging with me for all these years. I appreciate every last one of you…truly.

I-Cash: The Money You Never Knew You Had

You have unclaimed money!

Typically, when you see those words in your inbox, you quickly hit the delete button to avoid the scammers and spambots. Needless to say, when the Illinois Treasurer’s Office contacted me about the possibility of there being money and assets with my name on it, I was a bit hesitant. Once I started researching, I discovered that not only is the I-Cash site legit, but I (and some of my family members) actually had funds waiting to be claimed!

Meet Our New Beauty Contributor!

Finding a contributor is always a challenge. It is of the utmost importance that not only is the contributor knowledgeable (in fashion and/or beauty where applicable) and a great writer, but is also professional and well-suited to represent ChiTown Fashionista with brands and when attending events.

Luckily, my recent search for a beauty contributor resulted in me connecting with Elise Giannasi. A mutual friend (the talented and equally stylish, DJ Lani Love) sent Elise my way and I was immediately impressed. In addition to working full time and maintaining her personal style blog, Belle Meets World, Elise has a cosmetology background. Her time spent at the Aveda Institute in NYC will allow for two different perspectives on beauty, one as a consumer and the other as a professional.

I am excited to have Elise on board and look forward to her sharing the best Chicago has to offer in the world of beauty.

Please join me in welcoming Elise to the ChiTown Fashionista family! To learn a bit more about our newest member, click here to check out her bio.

Affordable Festival Wear With Kohl’s + $100 Giveaway

kohls festival main

Festival wear is pretty much a necessity in Chicago, because it’s practically impossible to not make your way to at least one music or food festival during the summer. Comfort is key, but one must never forget about style. And as we all know, style is in no way correlated with how much money you’ve spent on your look. That’s why I’m excited to partner with Kohl’s to bring to you affordable festival wear and a $100 giveaway (keep scrolling for details)!

Originally asked to style three looks for myself, for one of the most popular music festival, Lollapalooza, I decided it would be more fun (and frankly, more interesting) to loop in a couple friends. So I grabbed CTF contributor, Dana, and my good friend, Redgi Woods, and headed off to Kohl’s to shop for festival looks.

Soundtracked: Rooftop Loungin’

Fashion and music. Both surround me all day, every day (the perks of being the wife of a DJ) and hold an equally important place in my heart. It was only a matter of time before I figured out a way to incorporate music into this here blog. Although, I’m actually surprised it took me this long. Better late than never, right?

Our newly launched Soundtracked music series has been brought to life by my resident music mixologist, DJ HasH (I told you there were perks). Each playlist will equip you with the best tunes for every facet of life.

You’re only required to do three things: download. listen. enjoy. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll keep it on reserve for those moments when a DJ is nowhere to be found (trust me, it’s the easiest way to impress all your friends).

soundtrack rooftop loungin

The first edition is the perfect soundtrack for days spent on your favorite rooftop, taking in breathtaking views (poolside or otherwise) with amazing friends. In the words of DJ HasH, “You can sit back and vibe to this or get up and dance. The choice is yours. But don’t let my vision for this mix restrict you. I hope you enjoy this music any way you like!

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Click below (or HERE) to revel in the sounds.

6 Chicago-Based Etsy Shops to Bookmark Now

 Chicago Etsy

Sometimes we get so caught up in the major brands, that we forget about the indie gems sitting right at our fingertips. Finding legit, handmade goods can be a bit tedious  on Etsy (especially now that they’ve changed their policy…boo!) – though it’s always worth it in the end.

For this latest roundup of bookmark-worthy Etsy shops, I’ve decided to keep it local. From leather jewelry to quirky “chill pills”, here is my list of top Etsy picks, Chicago-style.

Timestamp: A Day of Pampering at Studio Within

I recently had the pleasure of taking in a full spa day in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. I’m talking the works! Needless to say, I was looking forward to a day of pampering and relaxation. But I received so much more! Eco-friendly, vintage-inspired décor and five-star customer service; this hidden gem warrants a visit!

Here are the deets on my spa day at Studio Within Salon and Spa:

10:50 a.m. With promise of snow (thanks Tom Skilling), I head to the window to find a snow-covered car and the snow is STILL falling. Great. *eye roll*

11:00 a.m. The car is cleared and I am on the move, leaving myself plenty of time to get through this snow and find parking.

11:44 a.m. So about that extra time… I am now trudging through the snow, attempting a power walk since I’ve parked a million miles from my destination (OK, it’s five city blocks. Still). I am going to be late. UGH. Thanks, Chicago.

11:49 a.m. I just walked in four minutes late, apologizing to the receptionist. After introducing myself, she greets me with such a bright smile, I instantly feel welcome. I take a seat in the nearest repurposed, vintage barber chair (how cool is that?!) and take it all in.

ChiTown Fashionista is Expanding, Meet the New Team!

As I revealed last week on social media, the ChiTown Fashionista team is expanding! As this blog enters into its sixth year, it goes without saying that it is my baby. I also feel it is time to shake things up a bit, with unique voices and fresh perspectives on local and global fashion, shopping and beauty.

ChiTown Fashionista team revised

I’m excited to announce that we are bringing back both new and familiar faces. Our list of contributors now include two journalism students who are extremely serious about fashion (Gabriel and Dana), a beauty guru who will tackle everything from cosmetics to spa reviews (Rita) and a serious shopper who has a knack for writing the most in-depth and informative store reviews and designer spotlights (Antaash).

To learn more about each of them, visit the About page. Then join me in welcoming them to the team!

Dry Cleaning Made Easy, Thanks to Dryv

I always get excited about mobile apps that make necessary tasks less time consuming and assist me with getting things accomplished on my laziest of days. In an era when you can get groceries delivered to your home and request a taxi (or even better, a black car) with the push of a couple of buttons, it was only a matter of time before dry cleaning would enter the app market.

dryv main

Dryv is a new mobile app offering quality, on demand dry cleaning and laundry services (they use the same cleaner as the Ritz Carlton) at competitive rates, seven days a week. Yes, that is correct. Seven. Days. A week.
