Who, When, What and How Much: Your Guide to the Best Thanksgiving Weekend Sales

Black Friday Small Business Saturday Cyber Monday 2015

It’s that time of year again, where we mentally prepare ourselves to either a) tackle the overzealous (and sometimes rude) crowds for discounted goods or b) post up on the computer all weekend to “add to cart” until our fingers bleed.

Navigating the sales can be a tad daunting and I’m here to help out a little bit. Below is a list of the sales you can expect to find from my favorite retailers and brands, from one end of the spectrum (mainstream) to the other (indie).

As I gain more intel throughout the weekend, I will update this post. So keep checking back in, and most importantly, Happy Shopping Thanksgiving!

Make a Statement with Boo+Boo Factory

boo and boo factory

With Spring finally showing face and Summer right around the corner, there’s no better time to liven up our accessories a little bit…or in the case of Boo+Boo Factory, a lotta bit.

If you recall my Etsy roundup last year or have seen my recent feature in NewCity, you already know I’m a fan of local jewelry designer Christina Anton (pictured above). In a segment of the market where metalsmiths seem to be reigning supreme (mainly due to the layered necklaces and stacking rings trends), Anton’s designs are both refreshing and uncommon.

The Shopbop Sale You Don’t Wanna Miss

shopbop sale the big event 2015

As you know, I can never pass up a designer sale. Especially when it’s from an online retailer I shop at least once a month.

Now through the end of the day tomorrow, you have a chance to take advantage of Shopbop’s highly anticipated sale. The discounts are tiered (code: BIGEVENT15) – the more you buy, the more you save. It’s the perfect opportunity to jump start your Spring wardrobe or simply spend that tax refund that’s burning a whole in your pocket.

Affordable Festival Wear With Kohl’s + $100 Giveaway

kohls festival main

Festival wear is pretty much a necessity in Chicago, because it’s practically impossible to not make your way to at least one music or food festival during the summer. Comfort is key, but one must never forget about style. And as we all know, style is in no way correlated with how much money you’ve spent on your look. That’s why I’m excited to partner with Kohl’s to bring to you affordable festival wear and a $100 giveaway (keep scrolling for details)!

Originally asked to style three looks for myself, for one of the most popular music festival, Lollapalooza, I decided it would be more fun (and frankly, more interesting) to loop in a couple friends. So I grabbed CTF contributor, Dana, and my good friend, Redgi Woods, and headed off to Kohl’s to shop for festival looks.

6 Chicago-Based Etsy Shops to Bookmark Now

 Chicago Etsy

Sometimes we get so caught up in the major brands, that we forget about the indie gems sitting right at our fingertips. Finding legit, handmade goods can be a bit tedious  on Etsy (especially now that they’ve changed their policy…boo!) – though it’s always worth it in the end.

For this latest roundup of bookmark-worthy Etsy shops, I’ve decided to keep it local. From leather jewelry to quirky “chill pills”, here is my list of top Etsy picks, Chicago-style.

Shop My Closet at the Milwaukee Blogger Bazaar

If ever you needed a reason to round up the girls for a mini road trip, I’ve got three words for you:  Milwaukee. Blogger. Bazaar.

On June 14, I will be joining eight of the area’s best fashion and personal style bloggers to sell some of the highly coveted items in our closets. Thanks to our lovely host, Livia Borger of Love Always Liv, we now have a chance to share our great finds with our readers (and anyone else who loves fashion and good deals).

I’ve already started rounding up the goods. And let’s just say, there will be plenty of shoes (23 and counting), handbags (20 and counting) and jewelry (I stopped counting) on hand. Below is a sneak peek of some of the shoes you could get your hands on at the Milwaukee Blogger Bazaar, many of which will be priced as low as $30.

Bargain Hunting: Designer Deals under $100 at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago

foc collage final

The old adage, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is”, doesn’t always ring true.  Case in point: The Fashion Outlets of Chicago (FOC).

FOC has made dreams come true for the savvy bargain shopper. However, many seem intimidated by the high-end designers who have set up shop there. Fashion powerhouses such as Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Gucci, Prada, and Zegna have settled in at FOC, along with some of the most famous department store outlets such as Barneys New York Warehouse, Bloomingdale’s The Outlet Store, Neiman Marcus Last Call and Saks Fifth OFF Fifth.   Contemporary labels such as Diane von Fürstenberg, Tory Burch, Trina Turk and Vince also offer shoppers heavy discounts on many popular items (some of which are from the current season). Perhaps that’s what sets FOC apart from traditional outlets, which tend to sell mostly odds-and-ends along with the eyebrow-raising items retailers were unable to move at their original locations.

Upon our last visit there, Nikia and I were on a mission to find deals for $100 or less.  We wanted to prove to our readers (both men and women) that although many designer labels are typically out of reach for many of us, this is not always the case at the outlet.   Not only is it easy to find gems at FOC, it’s even better that you don’t have to dig for them.

Spec-tacular Shades

When it comes to sunglasses, I’ve learned a few lessons. Buy them too cheap, and they break for no apparent reason. Pay too much for them, and you end up losing them or later find out that if you had just waited a few months, you could have bought them on eBay for a third of the price. Luckily, there is a brand providing a happy medium (or what I’d like to call the sweet spot of retail) – affordability without a compromise of quality.

Celebrating Black History Through Fashion: The Flyest Couple (1950s)

CBHTF Collage - Erika

The photos above were submitted by event planner extraordinaire, Erika Jones Purvis, and feature her parents in the late 1950s.

Not only are they a beautiful couple, but their style complements one another superbly.  From her dad who was always suited (peep the perfectly folded pocket square) to her mom who clearly knows how to work a dress (she’s exuding so much confidence in that all-white ensemble), I gather these two never left the house underdressed.

MamAfrica Clutches by Modahnik: The Kickstarter Project You Should Really Care About

It seems like everyone has a Kickstarter project nowadays. I’ve even contemplated launching one for my personal shopping fund (only kidding…maybe).

All jokes aside, Kickstarter is one of the best ways to support a cause or back a new business venture. Why? Because you’re not simply donating money – it’s an investment whose returns vary based on the level of giving. One local designer has launched a Kickstarter project that will have accessory lovers shelling out cash without hesitation or buyer’s remorse.

Modahnik MamAfrica Congo Kickstarter

Kahindo Mateene (of Modahnik and Project Runway fame) is  on a quest to bring awareness to the living conditions in her hometown. To create sustainable employment for women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she has partnered with MamAfrica, a nonprofit that strives to improve the lives of these women through several initiatives such as nutrition, literacy and economic opportunity.
