The VMAs came and went, and boy did I have a wonderful time watching them this year!
As you know, I partnered with COVERGIRL to host a a Chicago-style VMAs viewing party for a few friends. So, let’s get to some of the high points of the night.
My crew, who I officially deemed as my (VM)A-Team, helped me to bring the Chicago-centric menu to life! Berco’s and Garrett popcorn in apothecary jars (with printed paper cones for serving), mini Chicago-style hot dogs beautifully stacked alongside mini condiments, Harold’s Chicken on a fanciful dish and Ferro’s Italian ice in colorful dessert glasses. Our resident mixologist decided to round out the menu with a mind-blowing cocktail that included white grape juice + Chicago’s own Next Star vodka, topped with sparkling Chardonnay white grape juice and served over frozen, sugar-coated champagne grapes. Needless to say, the drink was a hit and kept the party going through the night.
Makeup guru, Andrea Samuels, stopped by to glam us up with some of her favorite COVERGIRL products. So, in between all the laughing, tweeting and munching, all of the ladies had an opportunity to enjoy a quick makeover. In terms of products, the fan favorites turned out to be the Flamed Out Shadow Pencil (which is an all-in-one tool for eyes and lips) and the Clump Crusher Mascara. I personally took a liking to the COVERGIRL Queen Collection All Day Flawless Foundation. As a foundation, concealer and powder, it offered great coverage and worked well on many skin tones. It’s definitely a winner for those looking for a foundation that won’t break the bank.
I’m not a selfie girl but Andrea rocked out my eyes so good, I had to snap a picture. Official #covermoment achieved.

In terms of fashion, you couldn’t help but notice that black and white (with some pops of red) was the most prevalent trend of the night. Danity Kane, Joan Smalls and COVERGIRL Becky G pretty much gave me all that I needed. Fashion heads were elated to see Becky G wearing the unforgettable (and not yet available) Fall 2013 Laquan Smith star skirt. Remember when we covered this collection during fashion week?
The beauty trends were a little less obvious, although we did notice that bold eyes and nude matte lips seemed to be the makeup theme for the night and that nail art is pretty much the standard these days. The dynamic DJ and production duo NERVO served up both trends (using all COVERGIRL products, mind you), which probably landed them in the top of the “best looking DJs to ever rock the red carpet” list.
Gaga was the talk of the town (both positive and negative) and Miley still has Twitter abuzz about her “interesting” wardrobe choices and behavior, but I think it’s safe to say that the highlight of the night was Justin Timberlake. In 16 minutes, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award winner reminded us of just how many hits he’s pumped out over the years and why he is still considered one of the best dancers in the industry. Add to that the surprise appearance by *NSYNC and you have the performance that shut down the entire VMAs. If you missed it, check it out here.
The VMAs definitely gave everyone something to look forward to, in fashion, beauty and music. Even the COVERGIRL Hunger Games: Catching Fire commercial got all the party guests excited for the upcoming collection.
