Showcase Your Outerwear Style with These Captivating Capes

There’s nothing I love more about the rush of cold weather than being able to break out my stash of heavy coats, jackets and sweaters. In addition to the added surprise of finding long lost trinkets and wads of cash left sitting in those deep pockets, it’s an exciting feeling when you can finally reintroduce your favorite outwear back into your wardrobe.

The cape is one outerwear trend that has me swooning. At first thought, the idea of a cape brought my fashion history nostalgically back to turn of the century trends—think Sherlock Holmes’ era— which also just so happens to be one of my favorite periods for fashion. But the cape has come along way since antique, foggy London town. Capes of today are taking on several different looks from classic to contemporary to military-inspired, each of which are totally easy to style.

The shape of a cape allows for comfort and the perfect amount of “wiggle-room” that you might otherwise lose with a more fitted jacket. On the other hand, if you find that you’re losing yourself in so much fabric (which is a more popular problem for petite women), a simple belt, pulled through the armholes and tied in front, is a great way to emphasize your waist.

While we Chicago fashionistas might chuckle at the thought of wearing anything but a floor-length, feather-down parka during our infamous winters, the cape is a great transitional item during a time when the weather is unseasonably warm.

I’ve put together 3 outfits featuring captivating capes. Which would you step out in?

Camel Fur Hooded Buckle Ruffles Cape Coat (available online) | Ted Baker FOIY Leather Panel Trousers (available at Ted Baker London) | Contrast Cap Toe Pumps (available at MANGO) | Rag & Bone Dunaway Hat (available at shopbop)
