A recent trip to Dose Market led to my discovery of local accessory designer, Nora Nieves and her jewelry line, My nOma.
Nora, who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), creates abstract pieces with a mix of unconventional materials. Some prime examples include bracelets dipped in resin and accentuated with colorful cords and metal beads; rings and earrings laced with Czech beads, ribbons and gold-filled or aluminum wire; and necklaces constructed with rope, chains and plumbing metal.
Nora’s use of vibrant colors makes her collection appealing to those who seek to make a bold statement. Add in the unique shapes (peep the Electric Neon Bracelets and the Deep Water Necklace), and it becomes quite obvious that My nOma is pushing the boundaries within the accessories world.
Clearly, My nOma has won me over. However, it is Nora’s personality and character that completely sealed the deal. After a brief meeting over coffee, I learned that Nora is truly passionate about her craft and doesn’t mind using her talent to help others. She’s partnered with other emerging designers for their lookbook photo shoots and spends a great deal of time with the After School Matters program as a jewelry instructor to local public school students. Isn’t it great when a designer’s persona is as impressive as her work?

Lovely pieces !! I own a couple of them and they are definitely eye stopping !!
I just love this particular line because is a reflection of individuality, uniqueness & eclectically… qualities I think describes the actual modern woman. Woman with strong views, knowing the visual statement they want to project, and are remembered by every time they come out to the world.

Nora is such an inspiration and her line, My nOma, is hot, hot, hot!
With bold colors and unusual/industrial materials, each piece of jewelry is a statement about the wearer that says, “I’m young. I’m fun. I’m kick-ass!” (Or at least that’s how I feel when I wear My nOma!)
